Carmel River State Beach (south access)
Access to the south side of Carmel River State Beach is at a large turnout on the west side of Highway 1. (This state park also has a north side, on the north side of the Carmel River, accessible from Rio Road.) This south part of the state beach is also known as Monastery Beach and San Jose Creek Beach. Though this is a sand beach, swimming is strongly discouraged here because of hazardous currents and low water temperatures.
